DANISH JONI MITCHELL COVER GROUP UNEARTH THREE UNKNOWN JONI SONGS
FOR NEW ALBUM
One of the world's leading Joni Mitchell cover groups, 'Big Yellow
Taxi.dk', are set to release a new album of Joni's songs, including
three unknown tracks.
The album, titled "Unknown and Famous Songs of Joni Mitchell" will
be their second, after 2002's "A Tribute to Joni Mitchell". Inspired
by the reactions on the 3 songs that Joni never released herself,
the group has started to record a new album including 11 more and
one big hit.
 The
artists, singer Christina Friis and guitarist Henning Olsen, have
been together for four years, re-establishing the status for the
21st Century of a 60s icon with fresh and innovative interpretations
of her songs.
The group have already won rave reviews from Denmark to the United
States and are considering a future tour of the latter in the
absence of their inspirational mentor Joni.
Both Henning and Christina were heavily influenced by the
incomparable creativity of the 60s, from the world dominating
Beatles (particularly, for Henning, the song "Rain", which inspired
him at first to pick up the bass guitar) to the folk revolution in
America led by Bob Dylan, James Taylor and of course, Joni Mitchell.
They say it was Mitchell's "special tunings and magical harmonies"
that inspired a career in performing her music, and it was her that
originally brought them together.
Henning Olsen had played bass and guitar in a number of Scandinavian
groups before a chance hearing of a friend singing the Mitchell
composition "Carey" in a café inspired him to create a covers band
with the friend, comprising of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor songs.
But it was Mitchell's material that they mostly played. By 2002
Olsen needed a new singer, and teamed up with Christina Friis after
she responded to his advert in a newspaper.
Friis had grown up singing in Sunday masses and a variety of musical
activities at school, as well as classical piano lessons. Her
interest in her parents' old records – like Olsen – inspired her to
be a singer-songwriter in the folk vein. |

 By
summer 2002 they were playing in cafes, before a demo recording got
them invited from the Joni Mitchell Fanclub to Jonifest in Woodstock,
New York – a celebration of Joni's music in an iconic 60s venue.
Encouraged by their demo and the invitation, they recorded a
full-length album for the festival. Both the CD and their subsequent
performance were enthusiastically reviewed on the Joni Mitchell
website with comments such as "they blew us away" and "highly
recommended." Now they are set to release "Unknown and Famous Songs
of Joni Mitchell", including three songs of a young Joni, which they
uncovered on an old live recording when they were in America. These
songs – "Come To the Sunshine", "Carnival in Kenora" and "The Way It
Is" - have never previously been released by Joni Mitchell, making 'Big
Yellow Taxi.dk's album a must for all Joni Mitchell fans. The duo is
accompanied on this album with a five-piece band.
They have had encouraging support from Danish national radio station
P4, who recently gave them a half-hour interview and played four
songs.
 One
Internet reviewer from South Carolina wrote: "It's always a bit
daunting to attempt an entire album full of her challenging songs,
but Big Yellow Taxi certainly prove themselves up for the challenge.
Christina's vocals glide through these melodies, some of which
require a strong vocal range and are not tried by too many, and of
course the REAL thrill here is the inclusion of three Joni-penned
songs that Joni never released herself."
The duo declares that they have a "personal fingerprint on Joni's
songs" and account this for their popularity.
